Pengilly's Cruiser Bus
North Mankato, Minnesota
Helping People Get Moving
Heidi and Jeff Pengilly never imagined they’d become small business owners—let alone the founders of one of North Mankato’s most unique transportation services. But out of personal transformation, deep community roots, and a passion for connection, Pengilly’s Cruiser Bus was born.
For more than two decades, the Pengillys have called North Mankato home. As parents, grandparents, and professionals, they’ve built a life around family and service. But when Jeff made a courageous, life-changing decision to step away from alcohol and invest in therapy and sobriety, it marked the beginning of a new chapter—one centered around purpose, creativity, and building something they could share with their community.
Inspired by Jeff’s experience doing professional driving, the couple envisioned something different: a business that offered more than transportation—it offered memories. Pengilly’s Cruiser Bus was launched with that mission in mind, providing private group transportation for weddings, birthdays, bachelor/bachelorette parties, winery and brewery tours, concerts, corporate outings, and even airport runs. The vehicle itself is as fun and vibrant as the people it serves, becoming a rolling celebration of life’s moments—both big and small.
But turning a dream into reality is no small feat, especially for first-time entrepreneurs.
“There were so many unknowns,” Heidi recalled. “Everything from business registration to marketing felt overwhelming. But we knew we had something special, and we were committed to making it work.”
Overcoming Challenges One Step At a Time
Through Heidi’s professional network, she heard about the South Central Minnesota SBDC and decided to reach out in March 2024. That decision became a pivotal turning point.
“The SBDC connected us with consultant Paul Vesey, who helped us with our startup planning,” Heidi said. “From there, we received legal guidance and support for website and marketing—everything we needed to move forward with confidence.”
The guidance and structure provided by the SBDC didn’t just save the Pengillys time and money—it gave them clarity. “We came in with passion and vision,” Heidi explained, “but the SBDC gave us the tools to understand the business side of things.”
That practical knowledge helped them tackle every step, from business planning to budgeting and promotion. It also helped them stay focused during the most challenging moments. “Starting a business is full of unknowns,” she added. “We overcame those challenges by leaning on our family, asking questions, and being open to learning every step of the way.”
“Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Take advantage of the SBDC, be willing to learn, and don’t let fear of the unknown stop you from pursuing your idea. Just know it’s going to take long hours—but it’s worth it.”

Success and Giving Back
The result is a thriving, in-demand transportation business that doesn’t just serve customers—it uplifts other local businesses in the process. By providing safe, reliable rides for groups attending events, concerts, or nights out, Pengilly’s Cruiser Bus helps generate traffic for venues, breweries, hotels, wineries, and event spaces throughout the region. It’s a ripple effect of economic activity and community joy.
And they’re not stopping there.
“We’re exploring the possibility of adding another bus and an additional driver,” said Heidi. “We want to serve more groups and keep up with the demand.”
Giving back is also central to their mission. The Pengillys frequently donate gift certificates to local fundraisers and support community causes. “It’s not just about running a bus,” Heidi emphasized. “It’s about building relationships and contributing to the community that we love.”
Taking a Chance
When asked what being a small business owner in South Central Minnesota means to them, Heidi responded without hesitation: “It’s being part of a close-knit community where relationships matter. We’re building something meaningful that we can share with our family and neighbors.”
Her advice to other entrepreneurs? “Don’t be afraid to ask for help! Take advantage of the SBDC, be willing to learn, and don’t let fear of the unknown stop you from pursuing your idea. Just know it’s going to take long hours—but it’s worth it.”
From a personal journey of transformation to a thriving family business, Pengilly’s Cruiser Bus is a shining example of what can happen when passion meets purpose—and when that purpose is supported by a network like the SBDC.
“The SBDC has been an incredible resource,” Heidi shared. “They helped us navigate legal questions, supported our web design, and gave us the confidence to move forward without taking on more debt. Their support truly made a difference in our journey.”
