Scoops of Joy
In the warm months of southern Minnesota, few things bring people together like ice cream—and Sota Scoops, the creation of Kai and Emma Sill, has quickly become a beloved local staple. Known for its cheerful atmosphere and creative frozen treats, the business combines youthful energy with a passion for community-building.
Kai and Emma launched Sota Scoops as a fun, family-focused venture with a mission: to spread joy, support local events, and offer something a little nostalgic in a fast-moving world.
Though both young entrepreneurs brought enthusiasm and creativity to the business, they recognized early on the importance of having strong business fundamentals. To support their growth, they reached out to the South Central Minnesota SBDC.
“The SBDC was such an important part of our journey,” said Emma. “We were just starting out and had a lot of questions. They helped us figure out pricing, logistics, and gave us ideas for how to scale.”
Reinvesting in community
Working with SBDC consultants, the Sota Scoops team learned how to budget for mobile operations, manage cash flow, and create seasonal marketing strategies that matched the rhythms of their customer base. The SBDC also helped them explore tools for inventory tracking and event planning.
Since connecting with the SBDC, Kai and Emma have grown their business into a familiar and well-loved brand. Their vibrant trailer and signature scoops now appear at major events, family celebrations, and summer staples throughout the region. With every cone served, they’re building memories—and a business with strong local roots.
What sets Sota Scoops apart is its blend of charm and professionalism. The duo not only brings fun to each event but also creates jobs for local youth and reinvests in the community through donations, partnerships, and mentoring.
“This region has supported us from the beginning. We’ve been welcomed with open arms, and we want to give back however we can.”

Their advice to other aspiring entrepreneurs? “Start small, stay consistent, and ask for help. The SBDC is an incredible resource—they helped us get organized and believe in what we were building.”
As they look ahead, Kai and Emma hope to expand their operations, add new flavors and experiences, and continue serving smiles across Minnesota. With the SBDC behind them and a growing fanbase, Sota Scoops is on a sweet path to success.
